In memory of the great librettist and our friend Thomas Meehan, who died last month at age 88, we are repeating this episode from 2015 focusing on the theatrical art form of book writing, with two celebrated librettists, Meehan and Richard Maltby, Jr., along with Laurence Maslon, editor of American Musicals: The Complete Books and Lyrics of 16 Broadway Classics 1927-1969. Meehan, whose books for musical include Annie, Hairspray and The Producers, and Maltby, who wrote librettos for Miss Saigon and Ain’t Misbehavin’ among others, join Maslon in discussing the influential books for shows included in his anthology like Gypsy, Show Boat, Oklahoma! and an almost forgotten musical revue by Moss Hart, As Thousands Cheer.
