In Tribute: TERRENCE McNALLY (1938-2020), “Mothers and Sons” w/TYNE DALY

On March 24, 2020 by Theater Talk Web

First aired: April 12, 2014.

The late Terrence McNally and actor Tyne Daly discuss McNally’s Broadway play “Mothers and Sons” in 2014.

McNally died from Coronavirus on March 24, 2020.

“Mothers and Sons” is the story of a woman who drops in unexpectedly on the surviving partner of her son who died of AIDS twenty years earlier. In the intervening years, both their lives have changed — more than they could have possibly conceived. The play asks us how far have we come as a society in need of healing and how far do we still have to go.

Happened upon your show late last night and loved the interview with Tyne Daly and Terrence McNally. Snapped up seats to see Mothers & Sons – on our last night in Manhattan tonight before starting our way back to Australia. As someone who watched Cagney & Lacey as a child with my Mum – and as a gay man in a ten + year relationship with a Japanese man – I found all of the themes covered in yesterday’s show immensely resonant. Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Terrence and Tyne for this work.
